The Bakery started out from a humble home kitchen that handles custom cake requests. From then on they opened as a small tenant among many in their first testing ground for a storefront format of the business. With the positive traffic of their first counter, Deli bakes set out to open their own bakery and cafe where we came onboard to support the design and build process. The site is located in the middle of Bandung city where the neighborhood is crowded with residential houses that are repurposed to hip and stylish cafes. We renovated a large and old school house, which in terms of the client’s business history of spatial scale is a sizable jump. The layout starts with an entrance where greeters are stationed, visitors are welcomed with a cabinet of merchandise. Following this area is an island of their baked products where mountains of sweet and savory pastry build up a festive feeling of confectionery. Accompanied by the open kitchen is then their indoor seating area. Finally it connects to the semi outdoor seating area, outdoor area, and backend kitchen. Additionally the facade is decorated with a beautiful landscape garden; arranged by our partner.
The challenge of our building process revolves around the existing condition of the site. The overall structure and shape of the house cannot be rebuilt from scratch as it will be too costly. Furthermore we had to maneuver around the old condition of the house such as dealing with leak points, as well as the aged structure of the house that needs reinforcement. Despite this we left the ceilings around the seating area uncovered. It preserved the vintage house accent uniquely with the cost of subtle finishing to ensure hygiene. We decorated the cafes with details such as washed and sporadic wall patterns on the indoor area, manual texturing method on the concrete outdoors, and use of chandeliers beneath the open ceiling. Our base objective for this project is delivering a sustainable, minimum maintenance, and effective budgeting strategy in covering an extensive site area.
As one of our latest projects, our project management skills in terms of building sequence and crisis handling in the middle of the timeline is truly put to test. Miscommunication of the progress between internal teams, overlooked small yet vocal points of the building, as well as management of manpower became the new level of perfection standard. In our years of venture as design and build consulting we concluded through this project that the company had reached a point where service excellence and flawless management is the endless game that we had to thrive in. We have passed the methodic and material exploration processes that were done in the earlier stage of our growth and found clarity on where our focus needs to be. In the end we successfully exercised excellence to remake a massive derelict house into a magical and hearty cafe.
