This personal complex for residence and family business is built in a serene yet geographically unique site. The owner originally resides in Northern Jakarta where his family home of 6 and business studios were located. He plans to relocate his family home and studio to Bogor, in a 1100 meter square of land. This plot of land will consist of two buildings for the house and studio. The studio has three levels, where the first two floors are for two separate businesses that the couple owns and the third level is a living accommodation for the workers. The buildings use a uniformed finishing throughout the surface; a raw industrial look such as wooden ceilings and a minimal paint finishing throughout the house. The main house features an indoor garden. Surrounding the uniquely shaped indoor garden is a curved glass, showcasing the corner as the highlight of the house.
In this project we learned the importance of agility in responding to changes and sudden updates regarding the natural condition of the site. The land is irregularly shaped towards the back area of it. We started with double checking the property’s actual measurement that impacts the building count within the site, as there is a change in the land size. We had to respond by rearranging the structure position. Being a rainy city, the shape of the house that is designed with flat symmetries risks future hazards from the water and rain. Fast forwarding a few months after the building completion, we learned the result of this natural response and we exercised a maintenance strategy to prevent it from happening further despite the nature of the building’s design.
Sudden changes to materials that have an impact to initial design, natural forces challenges, and quick response to maintenance needs are several of the challenges that pose as important lessons for us in this project. We built this house from the ground, to an extent of making sure the site measured ourselves. The science in climate, rainwater and how they react to building materials push us to understand the process of protecting the longevity of a building.
Responding to natural conditions that pose a hazard towards building becomes a great lesson in this project. We learned from this experience to enrich our capability of consulting in the future projects, where we can give empirical evaluation towards building design
