Made for the central showcase and store of Bandung’s well beloved bags and gears brand; Export flagship store is located in the city’s shops and lifestyle hub area. Neighboring numerous hip spots of cafes stands a heritage style house with a twist of vibrant colors decorated with unique shapes. The flagship store was built along with the brand’s rejuvenation in many ways. With the brand’s new generation of management also comes the refreshment of product concepts. This project benefited from the existing site’s unique shape that incorporates curved angles and woody material in many corners of the house, intertwining the playfully youthful concept. It is a trip back in time to the vibrant colored retro era. Shoppers start from the entrance, to the left is a showcasing area. Immediately they are welcomed with a chromatic yet subtle decoration of the store as well as the brand’s latest collections. Straight ahead is the main area of the store consisting of product display areas arranged in quirky functionalities as well as the cashier area in the left side of the store.
The existing building area complies well with the brand’s concept of colorful and timeless gear for the youth. As it is a classic building, we try to decorate it as much as possible and apply a play of shapes and colors. The walls and furniture are covered with mostly wooden materials and storage functionality for the product’s stocks. We use pegboards to hang the products and storage boxes using woven material as its doors. Across the store’s floors we crafted unique hangers with twisty shapes, vibrant colors, and reused skateboards as its base. We reused a pingpong table as one of the store’s main display tables. The cashier area uses terracotta bricks for the wall with an arced viewing access to the entrance area. To enrich functionality we placed a television in the product display area for product information. The TV is decorated with hue led strips and surrounded by three layers of acrylic in a cloud shape. The ceilings are also decorated with twisty shapes of lamp railings and mirrors resembling the brand’s shapes. To present the brand’s exploration of materials and colors we created a carousel that displays fabrics used on the bags. Tiles, unique shapes and textures, and colors became the heart of Exsport’s character in this store that we exercised extensive attention to detail and abundance of juggling in the production process for every part of the project’s decorative needs.
To deliver the intended design of the store, custom made products became the most extensive process of this project. We learned numerous production methods for the unique shaped elements of the store; as every material from glasses, acrylics, metal, and wood are produced separately from different craftsmen. The process isn’t free of errors such as broken parts of the products resulting from misproduction or mistreatment. When this happens, readjustment, trial and error, even restarting production from zero is inevitable. Detailing and keeping up with the timeline given the various production processes requires tight coordination within the team. The end product that we delivered eventually became a blast of colors and shapes that strongly emphasize the vision of this project through a hefty and abundant detailing process.
