A home built for the wedding anniversary present of a small family of three, this construction was made to be a house that accommodates the family’s love for their community. A gathering space for family, friends, and acquaintances without losing the serenity of a home. It is located in a harmonious residential area of Bandung city yet accessible to numerous lively spots nearby. Entering the house, residents will start with the ground floor consisting of parlor spaces, children rooms, and service area lanes to the basement. Up to the second floor focuses on the residents’ living area for the children's activity, kids bedroom, and master bedroom with a balcony view and walk in closet. Down to the basement area is where the heart of the house lies. Large communal area consisting of outdoor backyard and indoor living space, main kitchen, and service area.
The sequence of construction for this home started from the ground excavation process to build the basement area, bottoms up to the following floors. It is a modern minimalist house that tries to blend in well with the neighboring area. We try to deliver the feeling of spacious living areas assembled by colossal yet subtle materials; as opposed to building and arranging a collection of vocal points. Application of living wooden materials for the stairs and backyard decking complements the overall monochromatic and soothing vibe. The lamps are elegantly swinging in the tall ceilings, with a dimensional play of its arrangement creating a layered impression despite using steel materials. Tempered glass is applied for the flooring in the backyard pond to create a borderless sense. Every well-thought element of the house is then unified by the building’s circulation that is achieved through a careful consideration for air flow. The gracefully equipped spacious house ensures a pleasant feeling even during social events in the house. Yet the house is free of limitation for a growing space, where every corner can be built for additional features should it be in need of in the future.
This was our first experience in constructing a large scale residential house. We learned a lot of lessons in efficiency, may it be existing resource utilization or space management. The site consisted of an existing one floor building that we tore down and started from scratch for the new house. We learned that approaches to utilize the existing plumbing system, electrical, and facilities could have been applied instead of rebuilding from zero. Furthermore, application of living materials was proven to be demanding in terms of maintenance. We learned from this project to carefully curate types of materials before deciding to use them rather than choosing material solely for decorative purposes. Additionally despite budget limitations, maximizing the use of large spaces became a great lesson for us. We learned to ensure coverage of an extensive space is well equipped with facilities and rich with usability, preventing it from becoming a rather void. We successfully delivered an expeditious end product for the family, learned valuable lessons, and the most important of all is that we tapped into the life of our client and established a lasting relationship in this project.
